Hannah Bonjer

Hannah Bonjer studied Industrial Design at the Technische Universiteit Delft and graduated Cum Laude of the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2006, since when she is running her own design studio HNNH, for graphic design, often together with her types of creative disciplines. In 2009 she founded also Wijkwiskunde; for cultural / social design, together with two anthropologists. She graduated o.a. with ‘Compositie 8 1 19 19 1 8′; an animated film about her inner search for the interaction between her state of mind and the urban environment., and is based on several hundreds of photos Bonjer made of the city of Eindhoven.

Hans Maarten van den Brink
Directeur Mediafonds
Hans Maarten van den Brink (Oegstgeest, 1956) is direcreur Mediafonds en daarnaast schrijver en journalist. Met zijn novelle Over het water sleetpe hij vele literaire prijzen in de wacht. Van den Brink begon als kunstredacteur bij het NRC Handelsblad en fungeerde voor de krant onder meer als correspondent in Spanje. Van 1995 tot 2001 was Van den Brink hoofdredacteur televisie bij de VPRO. Hij zorgde dat programma’s als Andere Tijden, De Nieuwe Wereld, Laat Op De Avond, Sportpaleis De Jong, Veldpost en Waskracht ontstonden. Tot 2006 was Van den Brink directeur van het centrum voor hedendaagse kunst in Rotterdam Witte de With.

Astrid Bussink

Astrid Bussink (b. 1975,  Eibergen, Netherlands) is a Dutch filmmaker. She studied fine art at the Academy of fine Arts, AKI, Enschede (BA) in the Netherlands and her Master in film at the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. During this Master she shot her award winning documentary ‘The Angelmakers’ (First Appearance Award IDFA, Little Stamp award, ZagrebDOX, Best short Documentary, Dokufest, nomination Grierson Award and more). After this she made the short films Rückenlage / Upside Down ( Best Short Experimental film at Vermont International Film Festival, nominated Silver Cub, IDFA 2006), The 9 lives of my car (a.o. Dutch Filmfestival 2007) and I shot the mayor (Or: Plan B) (a.o. nominated Silver Cub IDFA 2007, official selection Zagrebdox and HOTDOCS). Her new personal documentary ‘Mijn Enschede’ will premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2010. http://www.docster.nl/

Catalogtree (Joris Maltha & Daniël Gross)

Catalogtree is a multidisciplinary design studio founded in 2001 by Daniel Gross and Joris Maltha. The studio works continuously on commissioned and self-initiated design projects. They believe form = behaviour. Generative design, programming, typography and the visualisation of quantitative data are part of their daily routine. Recent endeavours include pneumatic pushpin firing at moving targets, irregular print-screen development, isograms and the visualisation of  parking behaviour of New York diplomats. www.catalogtree.net

Annet Dekker
Tutor masterclass
Annet Dekker is programma manager bij Virtueel Platform. Haar interesse gaat uit naar de invloed van digitale media en populaire cultuur op kunst en vice versa. Zowel nationaal als internationaal wordt zij gevraagd voor diverse jury’s en adviesraden en geeft zij lezingen en presentaties. Ze werkte de afgelopen acht jaar als curator en hoofd tentoonstellingen/artlab bij het Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst in Amsterdam. Naast haar activiteiten bij het Virtueel Platform is zij freelance tentoonstellingsmaker en schrijft ze haar PhD aan het Goldsmiths College in London, Cultural Studies, onder supervisie van Matthew Fuller.

Floris Douma

Floris Douma, designer (male, 26), loves systems, information, technology, icons, on- and offline media. He is a night crawler (11.00h till 3.00h), loves Kubrick movies, is a Ryanair-addict & amateur cyclist. In may 2009, he graduated cum laude at the Design Academy Eindhoven Man & Communication department on two media installations. With his installation Crisis Telex he visualizes the enormous amount of news-articles which are published worldwide about the credit crisis, by printing them live on an dot-matrix printer one after another. With Self Surveillance he gives an insight in his excessive computer usage, showing infographics about his incoming e-mails, google searches etc, which he projects on a print out of app. 10,000 automatically made webcam photos. www.florisdouma.nl

Lernert Engelberts

Lernert Engelberts (1977) works as a director and writer. 
He made Driving Miss Palmen, a Dutch soap set in India. He was editor/writer for RE-magazine, and a regular contributor or BUTT-magazine. He wrote a dramatised garden program with Arjan Ederveen which he also directed and collaborated with director Michiel van Erp in 2006 for the documentary Warm Stories. Lernert also finishing his first highly critically acclaimed book of short stories Real Bad People. He publicises in the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant about art, was curator for Lost&Found, and is advisor for the Filmfund at research and development

Yuri Engelhardt

Mieke Gerritzen

The major trend within the graphic design profession is currently data visualisation, also called knowledge visualisation or scientific visualisation, an area that concentrates on the visual display of data. Although in the past, sources of  information such as newspapers and books were made up almost entirely of text, we are currently seeing more and more diagrams, pictograms, maps and graphs.  The next exhibition at the Graphic Design Museum in Breda, Infodecodata, will focus on the world of information that confronts us every day. In her talk,  museum director Mieke Gerritzen will give a preview of the show. Bregtje van der Haak

Bregtje van der Haak (1966) is de laatste jaren vooral bekend geraakt door de documentaires die zij over de Arabische wereld maakte. Voor ‘Saoedische oplossingen’ mocht zij als eerste Nederlandse vrouw filmen in Saoedi-Arabië. Naar aanleiding van deze film werd zij uitgenodigd voor de Arabische talkshow Kalam Nawaem. Later kwam daar weer de documentaire ‘Satellite Queens’ uit voort. Van der Haak werkte onder andere als eindredacteur voor het kunstprogramma R.A.M. en maakte documentaires voor DNW en Tegenlicht. In 2006 werd ze uitgeroepen tot Mediavrouw van het Jaar. In 2006 en 2007 was Van der Haak samen met Frank Wiering hoofdredacteur a.i. van de VPRO

Corinne van Egeraat
Participant Masterclass

Corinne van Egeraat made her first documentary film Lord of the Jungle ( ZIN/VPRO) in 2000, which she directed and produced with her own production company  ZIN documentary. It premiered at IDFA, the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam. In 2004 she made Cowboys in Kosovo (ZIN), which started at the IFFR International Film Festival Rotterdam, and since then screened at many international film festivals. It is the story of 4 Albanian brothers that play cowboys like when they were kids, and compare that to the real violence they were confronted with during the war. In this same year Van Egeraat won the NFTVM award for best new film and television maker at the Dutch Film Festival. Speeding on the virtual Highway (Submarine/AVRO), is an intimate portrait of new media artist Micha Klein. Both this film and her latest one Bridging the Gap ( IJswater Films/HUMAN), premiered at IDFA, in 2007 and 2008. At the website of  Bridging the Gap on digital documentary channel Hollanddoc, read all about the community built for the internet on the subject and read Corinne’s blogs written during the production period. Over the past year, Corinne travelled with an Around the World ticket and her laptop, writing a personal blog/vlog called Dislocated – my life away from home. This is a ZIN production in collaboration with Dutch public broadcaster HUMAN and HollandDoc. At the moment she participates in the Mediafonds@Sandberg workshop, where documentary filmmakers and new media designers work together to develop new interactive concepts.
Van Egeraat also works as a freelance director/producer for television and (non-)profit organisations. She teaches masterclasses in documentary film making, both to highschool students and upcoming professional filmmakers.

Antoinette Hoes

Antoinette Hoes is expert op het gebied van online media en communicatie. Ze is de oprichter en managing director van Leylines BV. Leylines adviseert over online mediastrategie en het inzetten van middelen voor de uitvoering daarvan (bijvoorbeeld online PR, adverteren, seeding, blogvertising, advergames of het aanwezig zijn in sociale netwerken). Daarnaast is Hoes programma manager creative industry bij het Virtueel platform, het sectorinstituut voor nieuwe mediakunst en e-cultuur en geeft ze les in New Media Management aan de PostHBO opleiding van het Centrum voor Communicatie en Journalistiek van de Hogeschool Utrecht.

Simona Kicurovska

Simona Kicurovska is graphic designer, researcher, video-maker and student at the Sandberg Institute. She made a beautiful installation about misunderstanding in language. Simona speaks fluent Dutch, which is not so common for someone who only lives 5 years in The Netherlands. She works part-time for Mijksenaar, a design company specialized in way-finding design. Simona is the only student from the Sandberg Institute invited to participate in the Masterclass. Bert Kommerij

Kommerij studied theatre at the HKU. Since 2000 he has been working part-time for public broadcaster RVU (www.rvu.nl) in Hilversum, the Netherlands. During his studies at the Sandberg Institute, designer Henrik van Leeuwen created the installation Where Is the True Value?, in which ‘worthless’ old money is converted into ‘valuable’ new money.

Marije Meerman

Marije Meerman lives in Amsterdam. Meerman is a documentary filmmaker since 1995 and worked for the tv-series The New World / De Nieuwe Wereld (on globalization) and currently works for Tegenlicht / Backlight, both for VPRO Television. She filmed in different continents mostly about the impact of globalization on peoples daily lives, choices and expectations.



Koert van Mensvoort

A historical, contemporary and future timeline of the various payment media in which money has appeared — from ancient Chinese spade money and African mobile calling credit to virtual cash in Second Life and eco-money in South America. Koert van Mensvoort received an MSc in Computer Sciences from Eindhoven Technical University in 1997, an MFA from the Sandberg Institute in 2000, and a PhD in industrial design from Eindhoven Technical University in 2009. He is director of the All Media Foundation and an assistant professor at the Eindhoven Technical University, where he heads the Next Nature department.www.koert.com

Christian Nold

Christian Nold is an artist, designer and educator working to develop new participatory models for communal representation. The Bijlmer Euro is a research project and practical experiment to create a ‘parasitical currency’ for southeast Amsterdam. Like other complementary local currencies, such as the Lewes Pound, it is designed to support local development and identity. Uniquely, the Bijlmer Euro uses recycled RFID tags to track where the money goes and to visualise this for the local community. Liesbeth Noordegraaf-Eelens

Liesbeth Noordegraaf-Eelens is a philosopher and economist affiliated with The Netherlands School of Public Administration and the Erasmus School of Economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. She has published Op naar de volgende crisis (2009), Kinderen koop je in de hemel (2009) and De Overspelige Bankier (2004). She is expected to earn her PhD with a thesis on the communication of central bank presidents in spring 2010. In her lecture, she will explain how we have become more and more dependent in recent years on financial markets and thereby on economic thought, and how life course models have functioned as a means of converting personal information into financial risk.

Esther Polak
Participant Masterclass (forms a team with Reineke Otten)
Esther Polak (1962) studied graphic art and mixed media and is interested in how technology determines (visual) perception. In this context she explores the visual and documentary possibilities of GPS. Her AmsterdamREALTIME project (2002) was one of the first large-scale art explorations in GPS (Global Positioning System) mapping. In 2004-2005 she developed MILKproject, in which a European dairy transportation was followed from the udder of the (Latvian) cow, to the mouth of the (Dutch) consumer. (http://milkproject.net). At this moment Polak works on a new GPS-project: NomadicMILK.  For this project the tracks of both nomadic herdsman and regular dairy transports in Nigeria will be recorded and visualized. (www.nomadicmilk.net) In her projects Polak manages to strip GPS of its nerdy riffraff, and instead uses the technology for making comprehensible visualizations and telling human stories.

Sander Plug

Sander Plug (1969) works as a freelance graphic designer and artist. He graduated in 1993 as industrial designer at the technical university in Delft and finished his Masters in Art in 2004 at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. He has exhibited in several group exhibitions in Europa and has been awarded with both dutch theatre & film poster award. He is a teacher in the graduation year of the Art Academy in Utrecht. In 2006 he formed an artist & directors duo with Lernert Engelberts mainly focusing on art movies, documentaries and performances.

Marcel Prins

Marcel Prins (Ibadan (Nigeria), 18 december 1962) is een Nederlandsedocumentairemaker.Hij studeerde aan de Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie en heeft daarna gewerkt als cameraman. Hij werkte samen met Leon Giesen in het productiebedrijf The Good Guys.

Simon Pummel
Guest lectorer masterclass 4th March
Simon Pummel is a filmmaker and animator and made over a dozen movies for British TV. For Channel 4 he made his first movie for cinema in 2004, Body Song (soundtrack: Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead).
An insolluble part of this project is the website that goes with the same name. For ‘Body Song’ he used ‘footage’ to visualize the cycle of life. Pummell won a number of prestigious awards with it.

Richard Rogers

Scrape news pictures in the USA and Europe and find different pictures associated with Abu Ghraib. Query local Googles for ‘rights’ and show issue hierarchies country by country. The Web provides research opportunities that would have been improbable or impossible in the past. Web issue mapping may make things visible, but what will the consequences be? Professor Richard Rogers’s talk will provide the highlights of a decade of Govcom.organd digital methods work, including techniques, analytical tools and info-political theory. It’s the beginning of a crucial critique of information visualisation. Rogers holds the Chair in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam and is director of Govcom.org and the Digital Methods Initiative. He is also the author of Information Politics on the Web(MIT Press, 2004), and with colleagues he recently completed a Twitter analysis of the Iranian election. www.govcom.org

Niels Schrader

Niels Schrader is an Amsterdam-based graphic designer, born in 1977 in Caracas, Venezuela. By shifting information from one ‘state of aggregation’ to another his conceptual design creates an ‘media dialogue’ depicting new forms of data based expression.Schrader graduated in communication design at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf in 2003 and further completed his academic studies in the master programme at the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam. He currently teaches at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.

Gerlinde Schuller

Gerlinde Schuller leads the Information Design Studio, which is specialized in the
development and design of complex information systems.
Due to the fact that these systems are comprised of a
multitude of different applications (printed matters, three-
dimensional and digital applications), the project work proves
to be very interdisciplinary.

Femke Snelting
Media artist & participant Masterclass (forms a team with Simona Kicurovska  and Liesbeth Noordegraaf-Eelens)
Femke Snelting is an artist and designer, developing projects at the 
intersection of design, feminism and technology.
Together with Renée Turner and Riek Sijbring she forms De Geuzen (a 
foundation for multi-visual research). De Geuzen deploy both on- and 
offline strategies to explore their interest in female identity, 
critical resistance, representation, and narrative archiving.
Femke is core member of Constant, a Brussels based association for Art 
and Media and with design collective OSP (Open Source Publishing) she 
tests out in practice how graphic design could work differently, using 
F/LOSS software and open content licenses.

Annelys de Vet

Annelys de Vet is a critical graphic designer and head of the design department of the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam (Masters Rietveld Academie). Since 1997 she runs her own studio, which has transformed towards a self-directed practice where she published several books concerning the representation of cultural and national identity: ‘Subjectieve atlas van Nederland’ (BIS publishers, 2005), ‘The public role of the graphic designer’ (Design Academy Eindhoven, 2006),  ‘Subjective atlas of Palestine’ (010 Publishers, 2007),  ‘Subjective atlas of Serbia’ (Dom Omladine, 2009). This year she is organized Mediafonds@Sandberg 2010 together with Martijn de Waal.

Daniël van der Velden

Daniël van der Velden is a designer and writer living in Amsterdam. Together with Vinca Kruk and Gon Zifroni, he is a partner in the design research collective Meta haven, based in Amsterdam and Brussels. Since 2007 he’s a lecturer at the design departement of the Sandberg Institute.

Richard Vijgen
Participant Masterclass (forms a team with Bregtje van der Haak)
Richard Vijgen is an information designer working in the field of dynamic and screen based media. He builds graphic applications based on research and experimentation. Most of the research is focused on exploring the boundaries between interactive media and social, virtual and phyiscal space. His work is object oriented in terms of development (object oriented programming) and perspective (the relationship with the physical object). This has resulted in projects connecting computers to books, performances, exhibitions, art in public space, air conditioners, and objects of all sorts. He’s been a self-employed designer since 2005, and teaches interaction design at the Arnhem school of art and design (ArtEZ).

Victor Vroegindeweij
Participant Masterclass (forms a team with Floris Douma)
Director Victor Vroegindeweij (The Netherlands, 1981) has worked as a professional, in the Dutch television and documentary industry since he was 18 years old. He worked for nationwide broadcasters like the VPRO and LLINK, where he participated as a director in creating a new Dutch public broadcasting network focusing on social, environmental and human-rights issues. His debut was the 2002 no-budget culthit WALKMEN about the history of hiphop in his hometown Rotterdam, the blue-collar harbour city. Since then he has directed 4 more documentaries. They display the wide interest of Vroegindeweij as a director, but also his love for people and the problems they face in life. Vroegindeweij directed two documentaries about poets and is now ready for stories with more urgency and importance.

Martijn de Waal
Co-organizer ‘Follow the money’, tutor masterclass, speaker conference
Martijn de Waal is a writer and researcher who specialises in the relationship between technology, media and culture. He is co-founder ofDeNieuweReporter.nl, a weblog on the future of the media, and one of the initiators of The Mobile City (www.themobilecity.nl), a think tank on digital media and urban culture. He is co-organiser of Mediafonds@Sandberg 2010 and will lead the Mediafonds@Sandberg masterclass. At the conference he’s showing thirty minutes of data films: from explanimation to PowerPoint cinema, from emomapping to infoaesthetics, and from data whiz to data poetry. www.martijndewaal.nl
